May: Sippican Harbor, Marion Mass

The Mystery Harbor in the May issue of Points East is Sippican Harbor, in Marion, Mass. Just outside this photo, to the left, is where Tabor Academy’s SSV Tabor Boy is moored. Tabor Boy has been a staple and landmark in the harbor for years, when she’s not off on a cruise with students.

In mid-summer the anchorage is very full with boats and activity, and is a great place to stop for a day or overnight. Marion is a well-protected harbor and serviced by Barden’s and Burr Bros. Boats, Inc. boatyards as well as the historic Beverly Yacht Club, which hosts many sailing events and regattas. The biennial Marion to Bermuda race sets off from Marion.

Used to be “big eyes” on Ram

I’ve sailed in and out of Sippican Harbor many times. At the mouth of the harbor is Ram Island, owned by the late Van Allen Clark. He had mounted on his front porch a huge set of “big eyes,” giant binoculars that were usually found on ships. Looking through those, one could see clear across Buzzards Bay. The Beverly Yacht Club is on Sippican Harbor, and so is Tabor Academy, as well.
