Lots of time spent fishing there
It’s Vineyard Haven Harbor, on Martha’s Vineyard. Those sailboats are moored in front of the oil tanks, and to the right of them, which you can’t see, is where the ferry boats from Woods Hole dock. That’s the Black Dog flag flying on the Shenandoah. I spent hours fishing there in the summers when I used to go down there.

Fixed my rudder there
December’s Mystery Harbor isn’t a mystery to me. On August 4, 1981, I made an unplanned stop at Vineyard Haven to repair a rudder, half of which had fallen off my friend’s O’Day 23 on a harrowing passage through Woods Hole. There was an upside, though, as it was there that I was introduced to dark rum (preferably Myers) and tonic, which remains my go-to summer drink over four decades later.

Black Dog restaurant is in the middle of the photo
We spent a week on the Vineyard every summer while our kids were growing up. The famous Black Dog restaurant sits right in the middle of the picture. The Shenandoah, with its Black Dog flag flying, is to the far left. The ferry terminal is to the right out of the picture. You can feel the stress float off your shoulder as you drive your car off of the ferry. We stayed at a friend’s house in Katama, between downtown Edgartown and South Beach. I now own a Dufour 31 named Katama, bought at the Mass. Maritime boat auction.
