Silver Eel Pond on Fishers Island is where the ferries from New London, Conn. dock at Fishers Island. The three white cottages are former Coast Guard houses, now privately owned. I have been a summer visitor to the island since I was 10-years-old (1951). Silver Eel Pond was formerly in the middle of Fort H.G. Wright, first established on the western end of the island by the U.S. government in World War I and then expanded in WWII. Large gun emplacements on the island (16-inch guns) protected the main entry to Long Island Sound from foreign warships during both wars. Fort Wright was also a training facility for thousands of U.S. troops prior to their being sent overseas to Europe. The fort is now largely privately owned, with the Fishers Island Ferry District being the largest remaining “governmental” entity owning property in the fort.
