Winter Mystery Harbor: Little Harbor, Woods Hole

It was very difficult to choose our winner this month. Our two top contenders not only correctly identified the body of water, but also the vantage point from which the photo was taken (by former Points East editor Nim Marsh, by the way). In the end the panel gave an edge to Mike Latza for his submission, which arrived old school, on a postcard via the USPS (see page 11).

Great views everywhere

How about Little Harbor, Woods Hole? Martha’s Vineyard is on the horizon. To the right of the photo is the Coast Guard Base and Nobska Point Light past the point. The photo is taken from the Shining Sea Bikeway. That’s a N.E. wind also! Great views everywhere in that area. Steamship ferries pass by there everyday, all day, as well as all the traffic in and out of Woods Hole passage. I hope I’m right!

A fine view of boats

This is lovely Little Harbor showing the shoreline opposite USCG Sector SE New England/STA Woods Hole. I think the picture was taken from the Shining Sea Bike path which is also the road to the SSA on-site parking.

In the background is Martha’s Vineyard across Vineyard Sound.

I’ve ridden my bike along that stretch many times, always a fine group of local boats moored in there, and quite a treat to catch a view of one of the Steamship Authority vessels passing as they transit to and from the Vineyard. I haven’t had a chance to visit in my own boat, and most likely never will, but I once spent a day by this harbor when we had a USCGAUX District 1 North get together at the CG Station many years ago.

A great place to grab a mooring

Little Harbor in Woods Hole, Mass. This harbor can be viewed as you drive north on Woods Hole Road. There is a large US Coast Guard Base located there as well. It can also be seen from one of the approaches to Woods Hole Passage heading west.

Little Harbor is a great quiet place to grab a mooring and enjoy a lunch on the water. Living in Falmouth my wife and I used it many times.
