Sea trials for a new craft

Randy Randall at Marston’s Marina in Saco, Maine, is a collector of small watercraft. His latest acquisition is an Old Town Sport Boat which he launched recently. He writes:

“As you can see I’m using a rowing adapter for a canoe. The factory oar sockets on the boat are too close to the seat. When you pull back on the oars you hit your stomach. For a while I kept cuffing Scout’s nose. Not good. This adapter worked pretty well. It got the oar locks a reasonable distance away and outboard of the gunwale. I tried a single paddle from the stern seat and that wasn’t too bad. I was surprised. Finally I used my longest kayak paddle from the center seat and that worked well too. The boat is very stable and there’s plenty of room. The only downside is, like most Old Town boats, it weighs a lot. I need Jeremy to help me launch it. So it’s a work in progress. I may find different oars and buy another set of oar sockets to mount the correct distance from the seat.”
