Peter Clayton Carter, 76

Wickford, R.I

Peter passed away on June 30 in Wickford, R.I. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of the late Rodney and Virginia Welch Carter.

Even as a young boy, Peter was always fascinated with sailboats. He went from playing with toy sailboats in his yard on Fairview Avenue in Edgewood, R.I., to racing his Snipe at Edgewood Yacht Club, where he won many races, including the John B. Fales Trophy and the Narragansett Bay Yachting Association Championship.

After graduating from Cranston High School East in 1965 and New England College in 1970, Peter met Norma Binder in 1971, and they were married a year later. Peter moved to New Jersey with Norma, where he continued sailboat racing, winning many Chesapeake Bay and offshore races representing the Columbia Sailing Association. After growing their family to include four daughters, Peter joined the Red Dragon Canoe Club in Edgewater Park, N.J., where he was instrumental in founding the Club Loaner Boat Program to introduce new sailors to the thrill of sailing.

When Peter wasn’t sailing (or thinking about sailing), he enjoyed reading, hand-crafting model boats, building HO train sets and working with canine rescue organizations. Peter also loved walking anywhere outside with his family and one of the many dogs he had owned over the years.

Although Peter lived most of his adult life in New Jersey, he never lost his love for Rhode Island and Narragansett Bay, Del’s Lemonade, Autocrat Coffee Milk and New York System Hot Wieners. In addition to loving his wife for over 50 years, Peter was the loving father of Gloria, Lindsay, Leticia, and Natalia; brother of Doriane Carter Ruml; and stepbrother of Karen Kiernan Mechem (George) and Judy Kiernan. Peter also shared his love and humor with seven grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.
