Kittery, Maine
Joshua P. Stevens of Kittery Point, Maine, died peacefully at home on January 24, aged 69 years.
Born on August 8, 1954 in Concord, New Hampshire to Frederick and Leslie Stevens, Josh attended Concord Schools and the New Hampshire Technical Institute in Laconia where he graduated with an Associate Degree in electrical systems.
After moving to Maine in the 1970s, where he remained for the rest of his life, Josh established a business as a Master Electrician. Stevens Electric was known for the high quality of its work which was often used as an example by inspectors for its compliance with safety codes and attention to detail.
Josh was known by his many friends for his kindness, intelligence and quick wit. A true working-class hero, Josh combined his high standards at the workplace with a deep understanding of politics and music, a healthy skepticism of the powerful, and a commitment to the less fortunate.
Once introduced to sailing and cruising on the Maine Coast, Josh developed a passion for traditional boats and the ocean. His pride and joy was his classic wooden 1957 Hinckley Pilot 35 yawl in which he cruised from Kittery to Mount Desert. Josh developed his skills in the care of his beloved Crackerjack over the years to the point where the quality of her paint and varnish rivaled the work of the best yards on the coast. Crackerjack was a regular fixture at the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta for many years. Josh sailed her often and well. Her gleaming dark hull and sparkling brightwork were admired by all.
To those who knew him well, Josh will always be remembered for his quick smile, his ironic sense of humor, his insights, his passions, and the depth of his friendship.
