So far June in Penobscot Bay has alternated between being damp, foggy, windy, downpours, chilly, flat calm and brief spells of warm breezes and sparkling water. Friday was the latter when I caught sight of the schooner American Eagle sailing past my second story perch. The dogs and I dashed down the stairs, I grabbed the camera and the red fog horn as we flew out the front door onto the porch. Otis took up his post on the rock out front. It would be the FOY (first of the year) exchange of greeting with Captain Foss and it delights me to no end. I’m sure about mid-August it may get a little old to ring the ship’s bell and wave your hat at the half-crazed (our sons would beg to differ) sailor gal honk, honk hooonking the Lathrop. But this time, it marks the beginning and we can all enjoy the anticipation of summer!
