Jack M. Thompson died May 1. He was a lifelong resident of Warwick, R.I. He was a son of the late Othman Clarence and Lillian (Baxter) Thompson, and was born Jan. 8, 1929, in Niagara Falls, N.Y. He graduated from Wesleyan University and Columbia School of Journalism. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953. He was employed at the “New Bedford Standard Times” and the “Providence Journal,” and as part of the Rhode Island administration of Governor Frank Licht. He developed and managed the Warwick Poverty Program and taught journalism at the University of Rhode Island.
Turtle Dove is a 36’ ketch built by Jack and sailed around the world, and the subject of a book he wrote called “Turtle Dove, One Man’s Odyssey.”
Jack was first married to Jane Kremers. They were parents to Andrew, Christopher, Mary and James. His second wife was Ellen McGill. Jack is survived by his devoted partner, Kathleen Martin-Estus, as well as a brother and seven grandchildren.
