This has been a very competitive year for this award, with 9 people nominated, all of them strong candidates. The winner, selected by the previous recipients of this award, is certainly a standout sailor. He is both a racer and a cruiser, and he’s been at it for over 30 years. His sailing CV includes the entire US East coast, from Maine to Key West; Bermuda many times, an Atlantic Circle, the eastern Caribbean, the Bahamas, and Nova Scotia. Boating with your dog this summer?

At Points East, we know quite a few boaters who can’t help but bring their dog along on their sea-faring adventures. While some dogs absolutely adore being out on the opens seas with their owners, there are a number of safety considerations that should always be made when bringing a four-legged skipper on board. Did you know that even water-loving breeds like Labradors should be equipped with their own canine PDF (personal flotation device), or that light-colored dogs can actually get burned without canine sunscreen? Great Crew Match Party!

It was a fun gathering at Handy Boat for Points East & SailMaine’s annual Crew Match Party where potential crew met captains and vice versa. We got the sailing/racing season off to a great start! Thanks to Gritty’s, Handy Boat, Hamilton Marine, Town Landing Market, and West Marine. Congratulations to Hallett Canvas & Sails for their 30th Anniversary! Drastic buoy removal planned in Mass. and Rhode Island waters

The Coast Guard is planning on removing lots of buoys in Massachusetts and Rhode Island waters. In particular they plan to remove all the buoys in Robinson’s Hole in order to “maintain or improve navigation safety while increasing efficiency and cost effectiveness.” You can read the particulars by copying and pasting the following into your browser: MSIB 05-16 Proposed Changes to Federal ATON in Southeastern MA.
